A recent study indicates that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such medications must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle support.
